Scarlet macaw country

Carara National Park

A national park famous for birdlife — especially the scarlet macaw — on the road between Tárcoles and Jacó.

Local suggestion Our suggestion from official tourism info — no link to the hostel claimed.

Carara means "river of lizards" in the Huetar language. Visit Costa Rica describes it as home to the only transitional forest in the Central Pacific and a world-renowned birding destination, known for the scarlet macaw.

It was the first national park with a universal access path (1.2 km), open to wheelchair users and visitors with low vision.

This is a local suggestion — the hostel doesn't run trips here, but the team can help you plan.

What to expect
