The feeling

From your bed to the break.

Hostel de Haan sits on Calle Bohío in the middle of Jacó, about 30 m from the sand — the hostel calls itself Jacó's first. Roll out of bed, grab a board and you're on Playa Jacó before your coffee's gone cold.

Between sessions there's a big pool, hammocks, swings and a community kitchen that gets a deep clean every day. Shops, supermarkets, local restaurants and an ATM are right around the corner.

Surf school

Surf's up.

Hostel de Haan is a hostel and a surf school: lessons for all levels, board rentals, and the beach about 30 m away. Never stood on a board? Start there. Already surfing? Rent a board and ask the team how the sea's looking.

  1. First time Never stood up on a board. Tell the team and start from zero.
  2. Beginner Caught some whitewater already. Keep stacking waves.
  3. Intermediate + Want to progress, or just company in the lineup? Ask what fits.
  4. Just the board Board rental for surfers who know the drill.

Jacó's bay has strong currents (Visit Costa Rica). Follow your instructor and any lifeguard or flag guidance.

People make the place

A table full of future friends.

On the hostel's reels, the long table — painted with a giant red hibiscus — is packed for family-style dinners. That's not a set menu or an included meal: ask the team what's cooking while you're there. Other nights the community kitchen, a movie night or a board game does the job.

  • A shared dinner at the hostel: guests raise their hands around the hibiscus-painted table.

How life here works

A day in Jacó

Sunrise to lights out.

  1. Morning

    Paddle out

Ask the team or your instructor how the sea's looking — Jacó's tide and swell change every day. Board under your arm, about 30 m to the sand.

  2. Midday

    Pool, hammock, repeat

The big pool, striped hammocks, swings and a siesta under the fan. Lunch from the community kitchen or the local spots around the corner.

  3. Golden hour

    Sunset on the sand

Walk down to Playa Jacó for sunset — the hostel's Instagram is full of them. Sunset hikes are on the hostel's list too.

  4. Evening

    Table, movie or town

Cook in the shared kitchen, join the table if a family-style dinner is on, catch a movie night or a board game — or head out: Jacó is known for its nightlife (Visit Costa Rica). No curfew.

Suggested, not a schedule — nothing here is an included package.
